Nordic skiing is divided into two categories: classic cross-country skiing and skating.
In classic cross-country skiing, the skis must be kept parallel by sliding them one in front of the other. To skate, you use the skating step, which is similar to rollerblading or ice skating.
So how do you choose the right equipment?
NORDIC SKI SIZE
The most important dimensions to take into account are the height, weight and level of the skier.
For cross-country skiing, choose a ski that is 30cm above your height.
For skating, look for a ski between 15 and 20cm above your waist.
These figures may vary slightly depending on the weight of the skier, a heavier skier will prefer longer skis to increase the grip surface and therefore simplify the glide.
Your level should also be taken into account when choosing a ski. The higher your level, the more you will be able to afford long skis that will give you more speed.
NORDIC SKI POLE SIZE
When choosing your ski poles, there are two essential criteria: your practice and your size.
For classic cross-country skiing, you should choose a pole that reaches the armpit of the skier. It is possible to determine the size to choose for your pole with a simple calculation: your height x 0.84.
For skating, it is preferable that the pole reaches the skier's neck. The calculation is: skier's height x 0.89.
