The ski pole is a discreet accessory, but it plays a crucial role in your skiing. Whatever the snow, powder or groomed, this essential accessory will allow you to take support in the climbs or the turns, in order to bring you stability. It is therefore crucial to choose a ski pole adapted to your size and type of skiing.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT POLE SIZE
The right size ski pole will help you to have a better position on your skis. If you already have a pair of poles at home, here's how to check if they fit your own size: simply hold the pole upside down, with the handle against the ground, and place your hand under the washer:
- If your arm is at a right angle, the pole is the right size.
- If your arm is too open (more than 90 degrees), the pole is too small for you.
- If your arm is too closed (less than 90 degrees), the pole is too long.
For those who do not have equipment, here is a table of proportions to choose the right size of alpine ski pole:
Your size (cm) | Pole size |
95 / 105 | 80 - 85 |
105 / 115 | 85 - 90 |
115 / 125 | 90 - 95 |
125 / 135 | 100 |
135 / 145 | 105 |
145 / 155 | 110 |
155 / 160 | 115 |
160 / 170 | 120 |
170 / 175 | 125 |
175 / 185 | 130 |
185 / 190 | 135 |
190 / 200 | 140 |
200 / 210 | 145 |
THE IMPORTANCE OF MATERIALS
Ski poles are basically made of aluminium. This material is known to be strong, light and well balanced. Its main advantage is its low manufacturing cost. There are different types of aluminium:
- Aluminium 5083 is known for its lightness;
- Aluminium 5086 for being strong and light;
- Aluminium 7000 for its good resistance, its lightness and its good balance.
For the most passionate, the carbon ski pole remains the best of the best. This high-end material, made of carbon, titanium and fibreglass, is lighter and thinner than aluminium, giving you great balance. The price is inevitably higher, but its strength means it lasts longer.
THE RIGHT WASHER
Depending on your programme, the type of washer is important. The washer is located at the end of the pole and its role is to prevent the pole from sinking into the snow. Most equipment is sold with a pair of single washers, specifically designed for downhill skiing.
A powder ski pole will have a larger washer that will stay on the surface. If the washers are too small, your poles may sink too deep into the snow and cause you to lose your balance.
Some poles come with 2 pairs of interchangeable washers. If this is not the case, you can buy them as spare parts.
A COMFORTABLE HANDLE
For good skiing, it is essential to feel comfortable. Therefore, the handle of the ski pole should be adapted to the shape and size of your hand to make it more comfortable.
- A single-material plastic handle has the advantage of being very durable. However, it is not very comfortable.
- A bi-material handle made of foam and rubber is ideal for an easy grip. It will better absorb vibrations and limit fatigue to a minimum. You will enjoy a great comfort and a very appreciable lightness.
CHOOSING YOUR STRAP
The last criterion to evaluate when choosing your pole is the strap. This handy little strap allows you to keep your poles with you at all times in case of a fall.
The main differences between strap models are in the material and width. A wider strap is often more comfortable.
Freeriders, who like to slalom between the trees, should pay special attention to this detail. It is advisable not to use them or to choose wider ones in order to avoid accidents or injuries in the event of a pole getting stuck between the branches of a tree.
A POLE FOR EVERY STYLE OF SKIING
Many models of ski poles exist in order to give you the maximum sensations according to your programme.
- Racing ski poles have a curved profile to limit friction in the air;
- Freestyle ski poles are often chosen to be shorter and lighter to send airy rotations;
- Freeride ski poles will be a little longer to satisfy deep snow enthusiasts;
- Adjustable ski poles are ideal for alpine and telemark skiers, who reduce the length of the pole by 5cm for comfort and ease of use.
